Hi! I (Shayla Teal) am the mother of Braxton, a severely autistic boy (now man) and my favorite person.
I’m also a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Registered Nurse. I work primarily with persons diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness, such as schizophrenia.
In my professional life, I frequently act as patient advocate, especially as it pertains to upholding patient rights. I act in that same capacity for Braxton.

My number one goal in life is to help my son achieve the best life possible, since it isn’t something he can do for himself.
By that I mean a life that he enjoys and keeps him safe, and one that can be sustained after my passing.
Unfortunately, the system isn’t easy to navigate or particularly helpful- at least, not for us.
I’m sure there are other parents out there that feel as I do and are struggling as I am. It shouldn’t be so hard to find high quality supports for autistic children and adults.
I hope sharing our story helps them and me, both.
